Review: ELF (2003) *** 1/2 Will Ferrell, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Edward Asner, Bob Newhart, Zooey Daschanel, Daniel Tay, Amy Sedaris, Faizon Love, Andy Richter, Kyle Gas, Michael Lerner, Artie Lange, Peter Billingsley, Peter Dinklage, Claire Lautier, Jon Favreau. Ferrell gives madness itself inspired by a man raised by elves at the North Pole and discovers that it is actually disappointment human unleashing his quest to be re-united with long-lost father (Caan in some inspired casting) naughty list occupier, who works as a children's book editor in New York City, just in time for Christmas. Thanks to transform hysterically funny goofy yet sweet and wonderful to Ferrell (no one can pull out razor look like a idiot glee continues to hold the innocent child and turn reveals a striking resemblance to Tom Hanks in BIG), with a great cast especially Daschanel beguilingly beautiful as his fellow Santas Little Helper Gimbelswho love. Directed with style and warmth from witty Favreau (who has a cameo) and written by newcomer David Berenbaum with smart, funny script that will appeal to all ages with a nostalgic nod to the classic animated holiday special for good measure. Instant holiday classic. Trivia Note: Billingsley, best known as Ralphie from the classic Christmas movie, A Christmas Story plays the foreman thousand!
